Nils Ušakovs was elected as the Chairman of Riga City Council in July, 2009 then re-elected in 2013 and 2017. Before joining Riga City Council, Nils Ušakovs was a member of the Parliament of the Republic of Latvia since 2006, has previous experience in economics, journalism and politics. For contribution to journalism in 2004 he was awarded the Cicero Award established by the Latvian Association of Journalists. He is a leader of the Social Democratic Party “Concord”, which is an associate member of the Party of European Socialists (PES). His priorities for citizens of Riga city are - social support to residents, construction of residential apartments, safety, urban planning and development of tourism. Having graduated from the Euro Faculty of the University of Latvia in the field of analytical economics Nils Ušakovs obtained Master`s degree in economics and European integration from Southern Denmark University in 2002.
