Mayor Karin Wanngård was born in Stockholm in 1975. She studied human resources at the University of Stockholm and worked in human resources management before becoming a full time politician. She entered Stockholm City Council in 1994, directly after graduation. From 2011-2014 she acted as Opposition Vice Mayor and as Vice President of the City Executive Board, representing the Social Democratic Party. Following the general elections in 2014, the City Council elected Karin Wanngård as Mayor of Stockholm. She currently also serves as President of the City Executive Board, Chair of the board of Stockholm Stadshus AB and Group leader of the Social Democratic Party in the City of Stockholm. She has been involved in various initiatives at international and European level, including as a member of Commissioner Moedas’ High-level Panel of the European Decarbonisation Pathways Initiative, and was elected Vice President of EUROCITIES in November 2016.
