Andries Geerse, is principal of WeLoveTheCity, a Rotterdam-based firm focusing on innovative urban planning and design. He started his career at the Municipalidade de São Paulo (Brazil), responsible for the urban development programme in three favelas. He brought the lessons learned to Europe and takes planning and participation to a new level. His focus is on urban regeneration in a public-private setting, including spatial, social, economic and sustainability components. Globally, he is applying this through the Participatory Slum Upgrading Programme of UN-HABITAT. Andries was also curator of the 2015 congress of the International Society of City & Regional Planners, entitled Cities Save the World: Let’s Reinvent Planning. His current work includes smarticipate, a digital platform that enables citizens to provide ideas and solutions for their neighbourhood and to receive automatic feedback. The project is in partnership with the European Commission and is being piloted in Hamburg, Rome and London.
